Joyce L. Richards, D.O., gastroenterologist, recently
joined the Medical Staff of Verde Valley Medical Center.
Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Dr. Richards graduated from Michigan State University for both
her undergraduate (Bachelor of Science in Psychology)
and medical school training. Her internship,

the University of Michigan Medical Center and a 3 month

one in the study of liver and biliary disease and the other in
travel. Upon finishing her fellowship
she took a two year position in GI and Internal Medicine for
the Indian Health Services in Phoenix, Arizona.
What began as a 2 year stint grew to 10 years and
provide her with a unforgettable learning and teaching
experience both medically and socially. During her
time with the Indian Health Service she was fortunate to
travel to Kenya for several months where she worked to
improve the medical care for the village of Lugulu.
She
is a member of the American Osteopathic Medical
Association and in 2005 was voted "Top Doc" in Phoenix
in Gastroenterology. This award is given to physicians
based on a peer review system in the medical community.
Five thousand physicians from Phoenix are randomly
surveyed and asked to name the top physicians in 36
specialties. Dr. Richards has been in private
practice from 1995 to 2008 in Phoenix, Arizona and has
recently teamed with Michael McKinney, M.D. and they are
located at 203 S. Candy Lane, Suite 2A, Cottonwood.
